Kindergarten Kopp

Posted on 18 Aug 08

Just where the road to the Bronx leaves the main track, there is a small cluster of friendly looking boulders. Apparently Kristen ‘hair loss is a state of mind’ Foley named this area the Kindergarten. God only knows why…

Undeterred by the silly name, the usual suspects (Thomson, Kopp, Pohn Jalmer) together with a resurgent Chris Sanderson and his stunt double Matt Bayliss managed to cobble together a circuit of reasonable moderates (6 problems all told) and one stout (but ultimately poxy) power test yesterday. If you climb around V3, this could be a very agreeable spot to spend an hour or two. If you climb V13, best you leave town.

After some preparatory work of questionable merit, Bayliss produced Draculan V1 and another slightly harder line to the left. JP chimed in with a sloper problem that could have been really good…but wasn’t. Thomson upped the ante with some gravity-defying movement more than 2 feet off the ground, Kopp did something to his hips on the first ascent of Graeme Pringle V1 and Sandy crushed everything in his path (including Lewis Thomson). The circuit was complete with JP’s ascent of Kindergarten Cop V7, a steep roof with the ubiquitous ‘hold ridiculous levels of body tension to avoid the dab’ style climbing. Destined to be a classic – watch the cover of Climber for this one.

Meanwhile, at the Bronx, the Palmy crew were ‘seshing’ down on Toast (and other bread products, by the looks). Clay volunteered to complete the resurrection of Mr Olympia, then wandered off looking for a one day ascent of Tyrant V9. No word yet as to how either project went.

Others (Clarke and Scotty) were seen at the Bronx enjoying the loose rock and bad landings. Some progress was made on the Übermensch project, all but one move has gone and it should weigh in at a burly V9 or 10. And JP scratched along Vostinar’s folly, Slopersonic V8 – for the third and no doubt last ever ascent.

Over and out.
